Whenever the line Indian medicinal science is uttered, we all will automatically start imagining of the two legendary sages ‘MAHARISHI SHUSHRUTA’ & ‘MAHARISHI CHARAKA’ who pioneered the ancient Indian medical science.

Medical is such a vast and widespread field. Nowadays every surgeon, doctor, nurses and any other related to medical field studies tons of stuff before they actually become a professional, as their profession directly affects the lives of people. In present scenario their studies and practice are carried under professionals but sometimes they have to pay a huge amount to get certified as professional.

The medical heritage of India is oldest among all. There are evidences of surgical operations, curing diseases & treatment of broken bones since vedic period. Then in 6th century BC and in 2nd century AD the time came where the two great sages ‘MAHARISHI SHUSHRUTA’ & ‘MAHARISHI CHARAKA’ dominated Indian medicinal science respectively.

Ayurveda is true born of India by the likes of great pioneers and sages like shushruta and charaka.

MAHARISHI SHUSHRUTA:

Maharishi Shushruta was founding father of surgery. He had conducted the variety of complex surgeries such as caesareans, artificial limbs, cataract, urinary stones, fractures, and his specialty was in plastic surgery.

He is the author of a famous book ‘Shushruta Samhita’ in Sanskrit language which was earlier known as Shalya Tantra. In it he describes all the amazing surgical procedures with the accuracy and curative ability to produce intended result. He was the first person who had classified the surgical operations and explained the plastic surgery as well as its tools in his book of 120 chapters in five parts. He had described around eight special operations for surgery, such as the cutting, piercing, opening, scratching, inserting, and stitching.

Today we all know the word ‘anesthesia’ and how it works, you will be amazed to know that the pioneer of anesthesia was maharishi shushruta and has promoted the proper use of wine with incense of cannabis for the anesthesia purpose. The use of henbane and Sammohini and Sanjivani was started in the later period.”

It is said that the surgical instrument which he developed were so sharp that it could even split a single vertical human hair into two halves.

Plastic surgery:
He had described all the basic principles of plastic surgery by offering a suitable physiotherapy before operation. The technique of the release of skin in order to cover all the small defects, rotation of the flaps to heal the partial loss and the pedicle flaps to cover the entire loss of skin from an area are well described by him. He has given various other methods together with the sliding graft, rhinoplasty, rotation graft, labioplasty, pedicle graft in his Samahita.

MAHARISHI CHARAKA:

Maharishi Charaka has been crowned as the Father of Medicine. He was a principal contributor to the ancient art and science of Ayurveda. He wrote the well known book ‘Charaka samahita’ which is considered encyclopedia of Ayurveda.

When the science of anatomy was confused with different theories in Europe, Acharya Charak revealed through his genius and enquiries the facts on human anatomy, embryology, pharmacology, blood circulation and diseases like diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, etc.

In the ‘Charaka Samahita’ he has described the medicinal qualities and functions of nearly one lakh herbal plants. He has emphasized the influence of diet and activity on mind and body. He has proved the correlation of spirituality and physical health contributed greatly to diagnostic and curative sciences.

Now we know the origins of medical science in India also world knows that the pure form of treating any patient is given by Ayurveda which covers not only cure but also describes there causes and removes the symptoms from its root helping patient recover from any diseases and any surgical treatment if needed.

“No wonder we are all crazy about Allopathy medicines as it is quick acting and gives instant results in curative diseases or surgical treatment, but it has its side effects which sooner or later will show its true colours.”

There are many forms of treating along with Ayurveda like Homeopathy, allopathy and many more. Ayurveda is totally based on findings of Maharishi Shushruta and Charaka which was the great contribution in the history in Indian medicinal science.
